What is coming out of my exhaust pipe?

I've got about 700 kms on the xsr now. Every single time I have come home from a ride, including the 1st time, there has been black spatter on my exhaust. I assumed at first that it was burning something out from inside as it was new. I just went on cleaning it off. Today while it was idling at start up I revved it and saw that it was an oily looking fluid spattering out of the pipe and there was also a bit of greyish smoke. I went to the dealer and the guy who sold me the bike took a picture and said he thinks it might be rust inhibitor or something. I am not sure about that at this point. It is definitely a sticky fluid that has a watery consistency but an oily look. The bike is also a bit more vibey than I expected and was right from the get go. I'm wondering if this would be in anyway related, but at the same time my chain appears pretty slack and it may have been from the start which could also cause the excessive vibrations. It will be in for its 1000km service next week and I know they will adjust the chain but I will definitely be letting them know about both potential 'issues'. Any extra information I can gather from you folks to arm myself with will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Well I was at the dealers today at a demo ride event and had the opportunity to inspect other bikes there which all had the same black crud on the exhausts. So it would seem that it is just condensation spitting out at start up. I suspected this already since I had wiped it off when warmed up and no more had come out by the time I got home yesterday. So it only spits out at startup when cold. I also had them adjust my chain tension which was way loose. So the bike is performing much better now. Oh. I tried out and XSR900 which was kind of fun. It had a ton of power. Very easy to get the front wheel off the ground. But I prefer a bike that has usable power and which you need to actually shift through the gears. I never got above 3rd gear on the demo ride and basically just stayed in that gear the whole time because I didn't need any others. I also found the seat less comfortable than ours but other than that it felt much the same. Take care!

Thanks so much for this, sir!

I just recently purchased a 2022 Yamaha XSR700 and noticed the same on mine as well. Currently has around 50ish miles on it.
I think it's down to the shape of the exhaust end cover - what would normally be spat out onto the tarmac sits around the end of the exhaust cover instead. Just normal emissions deposits/condensation.

I adjusted my chain first time in 100 km, then next time somewhere around 600 km. And they adjusted it again on 1000 km inspection. If you haven’t done so, I can imagine your chain is pretty loose.
Adjusted my chain once in a bit over 2000 miles. It's a shade loose right now, but I'd rather run slightly loose than too tight. Broke sideplates of a chain on my Zephyr 550 and I'm suspecting it was too tight in spite of being about what is called for. Now I actually will compress the rear suspension to the point where the axle, swing arm pivot, and countershaft alight, check slack and try to have around 1" there. Then when I unload the suspension whatever is there is right. My KLX 250 was way tight when done per the manual and with my KLX650 I only had to adjust the chain like three times in 15,000 miles, the time when some tight links start showing up.

Make sure you're not overtightening the chain. It will accelerate wear of the chain and sprockets and possibly damage the bearings in the rear wheel or the counter shaft bearing. Expensive stuff.
