can you tell me what this little plastic part is for?

According to Yamaha parts listing it is a seal. Apparently something to deflect water away from places Yamaha doesn't want it to go or something. Looks like it could deflect water that may spray in from the side between the seat and frame.

Notice how it covers the battery terminal area on both sides.
