Anyone painted tank?

Thinking about painting the tank. Anyone know if the yamaha written bit on each side is just painted on/stencil, sticker (doesnt feel like it), or pressed/stamped into aluminium from back (cus it does stand out a bit...)?

I am also interested in a painted tank. White with the bolted stripe painted red is my idea. I'm thinking to just tape the Yamaha letters to cover them while painting. If anyone has experience with tank painting or useful youtube guides, please post them! :)
From parts diagram I've found it looks like they're decals...I'll let you know when/if I get round to it...
Depends what colour you have?
As far as i know the Garage Metal one has raised stuck on decals and the forest green and limited editions are flush vinyl type stickers, then probably clear coated after..
Forest green. Aint flush, which was why I though stamped cus they feel quite raised to me...but nope decals apparently (according to yamaha spain). See if I've got time next week, while in for 1st service, to paint.

Don't forget to take some pics and share them here with us! Can't wait to see your new custom hand-painted tank :)

Oh right, my apologies as i was just going off photo's. Look forward to seeing the freshly painted tank too...
Actually surprised i haven't seen bikes wrapped more often, usually it's cars, but with how cheap and quick bikes are to wrap, there should be far more riders getting into this, whether it's a shop or them doing it.

Plus there are so many options, more colors than you'll ever want to choose from.
Wrapping it did occur to me, but not sure if I could do it by myself...(not that good with decals, etc. Still have nightmares about protective film wrapping books at school hahaha) and places were quoting around 400-500 euros to do it here...so painting instead (which aint to diffcult to do myself as just doing matt white with 1 small stencil). It just finding time to do it as I use bike to commute on to work need a few days off.
Try plasti dip.. if you don't like it, peel it off.
I painted my tank - on the 'PINION SON' Bike see here.

Don't know if you've removed your tank yet, but i you haven't - it's not actually a tank, it's 3 panels (2 sides and top / middle). The Logos etc on mine (60th anniversary) were decals, but I've see other models where they look like they are applied.

Once the panels are removed, you can still use your bike, there is a smaller black actual tank underneath - it looks kind of 'mad max'...

If you get a good resprayer then if you want Yamaha back on your bike, I'd recommend they spray it on rather than vinyl which is what they did with mine.

One thing I would mention, then you put the new tank covers back on, either buy some washers or don't over tighten especially on the middle plastic part as it might damage the new paint job.
Thanks for your reply Piers. Love the look of your bike! How much did the vinyl wrap set you back? Its convenient to be able to make it original again :)

The vinyl wrap on the side panels was about £100 - just done by a sign company I've used before that are down the road from me. They wrapped the metallic panels you can buy saying it would apply better than the plastic ones.
Hmm... What panels are you referring to? The side panels that many people are mesh-modding?
I'd also appreciate if you could tell me a bit more about the removal of the "tank". You mentioned earlier that it's not a tank, rather 3 panels. I understand the middle one but what about the other 2? Cheers! :grin2:

If you take a look at the tank construction it should become clear which three panels Piers is talking about :wink2:
Cheers

The tank panels where spray painted not wrapped.

The side panels I referred to are the small panels below the tank which have the three circles on them see below, the wrapped design:

With regards to the actual tank panels, hopefully this image will help!

And here is what the tank underneath looks like when you've removed the above...(with the aluminium side panels pre-wrapping).
